ABOUT MOUNT CLEAR

Mount Clear is a leafy, undulating residential suburb located approximately five kilometres south of the Ballarat city centre, positioned along the historic route to Buninyong.

The suburb has the urban density of Ballarat Central and open, bush-fringed landscapes of the southern hills. Its name is descriptive of the clear views once afforded from its elevated positions, looking back toward the city and across the volcanic plains of the Western District.

The character of Mount Clear is primarily that of an educational and family-oriented hub. It is home to a significant academic precinct, including Mount Clear College and Damascus College, which draws students from across the region and gives the suburb a youthful, active energy. The residential areas are a mix of mid-century brick homes and more contemporary developments, many of which are set on larger allotments with established gardens and mature native trees.

Geographically, the suburb is shaped by the Canadian Creek valley to the east and the rising slopes of the White Horse Range to the west. This creates a landscape of significant natural beauty, with many streets offering a "forest-living" feel despite being minutes from major services. The Woowookarung Regional Park sits on the suburb's eastern boundary, providing thousands of hectares of bushland for hiking, mountain biking, and nature observation. The Yarrowee River Trail also skirts the suburb, offering a continuous green corridor for walkers and cyclists that connects the area to both Buninyong and the Ballarat CBD.

Community life in Mount Clear is supported by a range of local amenities, including a dedicated shopping precinct with a supermarket and various specialty stores, making it largely self-sufficient. The suburb is a popular choice for those who value outdoor recreation and a connection to the Australian bush, without sacrificing the convenience of suburban infrastructure. With its hilly terrain, proximity to the Federation University campus in Churchill Park, and its abundance of parkland, Mount Clear remains one of Ballarat's most stable and sought-after southern suburbs.
