ABOUT NERRINA

Nerrina is a serene, forest-fringed residential locality situated on the north-eastern edge of Ballarat. Formerly known as Little Bendigo, the area was a significant gold-mining site during the 19th century, particularly famous for its rich quartz reefs.

Today, the suburb has transitioned into a tranquil "bushland" enclave, nestled between the urban limits of Ballarat East and the expansive greenery of the Woowookarung Regional Park and the Brown Hill forest.

The character of Nerrina is defined by its steep, undulating topography and its integration with the surrounding natural environment. Unlike the flat plains found to the west of Ballarat, Nerrina is characterised by winding, hilly roads and homes that are often tucked into the native eucalypt canopy. This unique geography provides many residents with elevated views over the city or into the dense bushland, making it a popular choice for those seeking a semi-rural lifestyle that remains only minutes from the Ballarat CBD.

The history of the area is still very much alive in its landscape. The former Little Bendigo Primary School, established in 1878, remains a central landmark and a reminder of the suburb's origins as a bustling mining community. Scattered throughout the hills are remnants of the old mining era, including old battery sites and shafts, many of which have been reclaimed by the forest. The name Nerrina itself is of Aboriginal origin, believed to refer to a local flower, reflecting the suburb's deep connection to the Victorian bush.

Community life in Nerrina is quiet and private, appealing to nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The suburb serves as a gateway to numerous walking and mountain biking trails that weave through the adjacent state forest and regional parks. With its lack of commercial hubs and heavy traffic, the locality maintains a peaceful, secluded atmosphere, where the sound of birdsong and the sight of local wildlife are part of daily life. It represents a rare pocket of Ballarat where the city’s industrial heritage has been softened by the enduring regrowth of the Australian bush.
