ABOUT WINDERMERE

Windermere is an expansive rural locality situated approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Ballarat. Named after the famous lake district in England, the area is defined by its wide-open basalt plains and a deep-seated identity as a premier agricultural district.

The landscape is dominated by large-scale farming operations, primarily focused on sheep grazing for wool and meat, as well as cropping. Its history is closely tied to the railway; the locality sits on the line between Ballarat and Ararat, and the historic 1880s-era station and goods shed remain as markers of its importance as a transport hub for local produce.

Community life in Windermere has historically revolved around its shared institutions with neighboring Burrumbeet and Cardigan. While once a more densely populated village with its own hotel, chaff mill, and mechanics' institute, it has evolved into a quiet, private pastoral area. The Windermere Hall and the local Uniting Church stand as the primary physical gathering points for the farming families who have managed the land here for generations.

Environmentally, the area is characterised by the Burrumbeet Creek, which winds through the fertile volcanic soils, and its proximity to Lake Burrumbeet to the west. The scenery is quintessential Western District: vast golden paddocks, intermittent rows of cypress windbreaks, and a horizon that stretches toward the peaks of the Central Highlands.
