ABOUT SCARSDALE

Scarsdale is a historic rural village located along the Glenelg Highway, approximately 25 kilometres south-west of Ballarat. Situated in the north-western reaches of the Golden Plains Shire, the township is nestled on the banks of the Woady Yaloak River, surrounded by a landscape that seamlessly blends fertile volcanic plains with pockets of dense native forest.

The identity of Scarsdale is deeply rooted in the mining boom of the 1850s and 60s, particularly the discovery of gold at Brown's Diggings and along the various deep leads that weave beneath the soil. At its peak, the settlement was a bustling industrial hub with its own borough, multiple churches, foundries, a brewery, and more than a dozen hotels. While the frantic energy of the gold fields has long since faded, the town’s heritage remains visible in its linear street layout and a collection of significant civic buildings. The historic red-brick Scarsdale Hotel, the rendered Town Hall, and the former post office still stand as prominent landmarks at the town's center, while an Avenue of Honour at the northern entrance commemorates the community's contribution to the First World War.

Today, Scarsdale has evolved into a quiet, primarily agricultural community that prizes its "clean and green" lifestyle. The local landscape is a mix of broad-acre grazing land and "rural living" zones, attracting families and retirees who seek space and a connection to the outdoors. Community life revolves around the Scarsdale primary school, the local general store, and the recreation reserve. The surrounding environment, including the Scarsdale Natural Features Reserve and the nearby Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail, offers significant opportunities for bushwalking and cycling, allowing residents to explore the remnant forests and historic mining sites that are scattered throughout the hills. This balance of deep historical significance and a serene, pastoral atmosphere makes Scarsdale a quintessential example of the enduring spirit of the Victorian goldfields.
