ABOUT SCOTSBURN

Scotsburn (often referred to in historical contexts related to "leads" as part of the broader Buninyong goldfields) is a serene, rural locality situated at the southern foot of Mount Buninyong.

Located roughly 16 kilometers south-east of Ballarat along the Midland Highway, the area is defined by its striking volcanic landscape and rolling pastoral hills.

The character of the area is deeply rooted in its dual heritage of pioneering agriculture and 19th-century gold mining. Originally settled by the Scott family in the late 1830s for sheep and cattle grazing, the landscape still bears the hallmarks of this era with sprawling properties and historic dry-stone walls. The "lead" in local place names refers to the "deep leads" or ancient riverbeds containing gold that ran beneath the basalt plains, which once drew thousands of prospectors to the nearby gullies and creeks.

Today, Scotsburn is a quiet community where the lifestyle is centered around the land. The heart of the locale is marked by the historic Scotsburn Hall and the local primary school, which serves as a communal hub for the surrounding farmsteads. The scenery is dominated by the looming presence of Mount Buninyong, providing residents with elevated views and a sense of seclusion despite the proximity to the regional hub of Ballarat. The environment is characterized by open eucalypt forests and fertile volcanic soils that continue to support diverse agricultural pursuits.
