ABOUT KOOYONG

Kooyong is one of Melbourne’s most exclusive and geographically compact residential suburbs, located approximately seven kilometres southeast of the CBD within the City of Stonnington. Its name is derived from the Aboriginal word "Kooyongkoot," meaning a camp or resting place, which reflects the suburb's tranquil setting along the Gardiners Creek valley.

Historically, Kooyong established itself as a premier "old money" enclave in the early 20th century, following the subdivision of large 19th-century estates into a limited number of wide, leafy boulevards. This legacy has resulted in a remarkably intact collection of high-end heritage architecture, ranging from grand Edwardian villas to significant Interwar dwellings in styles such as Old English and Streamline Moderne.

The lifestyle in Kooyong is defined by a refined sense of privacy and a strong connection to elite recreational facilities. Although technically located just across the suburb boundary in Malvern, the world-renowned Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club remains the area's primary cultural and social landmark, serving as the former home of the Australian Open and continuing to host the annual Kooyong Classic.

For nature and leisure, residents frequent the vast green expanses of Kooyong Park and Sir Robert Menzies Reserve, which offer scenic walking and cycling paths that link to the broader Gardiners Creek and Main Yarra trails. The local social scene is centered on a boutique shopping strip near the railway station, where a selection of upscale cafes and specialty services maintain a quiet, village-like intimacy.

Connectivity and education are central to Kooyong's enduring status as one of Melbourne's most aspirational addresses. Despite its secluded atmosphere, the suburb features its own railway station and is served by the route 16 tram along Glenferrie Road, providing efficient access to the city and the high-end retail precincts of Toorak and Malvern.

The suburb is a preferred location for families due to its proximity to some of Australia's most prestigious schools, including St Kevin’s College and Scotch College, which borders the suburb across the valley. With its limited housing supply, heritage-protected streetscapes, and consistently record-breaking property values, Kooyong remains a stable and prestigious sanctuary within Melbourne’s inner-eastern corridor.
