ABOUT SCOTCHMANS LEAD

Scotchmans Lead, this quiet rural locality is tucked into the undulating landscape just six kilometers south-west of Buninyong and south of Ballarat. It is a place defined by its deep connection to the Yarrowee River and its transformative history as a 19th-century mining hamlet.

The name itself is a tribute to the "deep leads"—ancient, gold-bearing riverbeds buried beneath the volcanic soil—which were first discovered here in April 1857. In its heyday, the area was a bustling settlement of over 600 people, supporting two hotels, a Presbyterian school, and major mining operations like the Lady Franklin and Buninyong Gold Company. Today, that industrial noise has faded, leaving behind a tranquil pastoral setting where the heritage is visible in the repurposed historic buildings, such as the former schoolhouse that now serves as a private residence.

The modern character of Scotchmans Lead is distinctly equestrian and agricultural. The landscape is a mosaic of open grazing land, small-scale farms, and winding country lanes, with many residents keeping horses or cattle on the fertile volcanic plains. Community life is low-key and private, framed by the Yarrowee River to the west and the scenic backdrop of Mount Buninyong to the north-east. It remains a sought-after pocket for those looking for a "hills and valleys" lifestyle that feels worlds away from the city while being only a short drive from the services of Ballarat.
