How a Sponsorship Opportunity Became All About the Community

In a major boost for grassroots sport in Melbourne’s inner north, the Coburg Football Club has welcomed Barry Plant Coburg as a jersey sponsor in 2026, just one year after announcing a landmark five-year partnership with the same office. As part of the partnership, Coburg’s historic home ground has been renamed Barry Plant Park, symbolising a shared commitment to community, connection, and the future of local football.

But this is far more than a naming rights deal or a logo on a jersey – it’s a genuine alliance between two organisations deeply rooted in Coburg and passionate about its growth. At the heart of the partnership are Coburg Football Club General Manager Nick Byrne and Barry Plant Coburg Managing Director Fadi Khoder, whose shared values and community-first mindset laid the foundation for something more meaningful than marketing.

The first seeds were planted when Fadi purchased a new office just 100 metres from the club’s ground, and a team member suggested the idea of sponsorship. When Fadi approached the club, however, discussions quickly evolved into deeper conversations about purpose, legacy, and making a lasting impact.

“It was first and foremost a community decision, not a business decision,” said Fadi. “What sold me was the passion of the club and its people. Coburg plays in a league full of clubs with far greater resources, but they’ve got heart, resilience, and an unshakable drive to succeed. Supporting a pillar of the community like that was a no-brainer.”

While initial discussions centred on traditional sponsorship, both parties soon realised their aspirations aligned far beyond financial exchange. The final agreement reflects this shared vision: a long-term, values-driven partnership that brings tangible benefits to the broader Coburg community.

“Fadi reached out soon after purchasing his new office near our ground,” Byrne explained. “It quickly became clear that we both wanted the same thing: to build something meaningful, sustainable, and positive for Coburg.”

As the club’s premier sponsor, Barry Plant Coburg holds the naming rights to the ground, in addition to the Barry Plant logo proudly featuring on the iconic Coburg jersey in the 2026 season. But for Fadi, the commitment goes far beyond signage.

Fadi, a father of 11, five of whom have played footy across Melbourne’s north, believes strongly in the power of community sport to shape lives.

“I’d rather see kids at the footy club than on the streets,” he said. “Footy keeps them active, builds their confidence, teaches life skills – things they won’t get staring at a screen. It’s about more than just the game. It’s a social safety net.”

His support also stems from understanding the challenges faced by independent clubs like Coburg, particularly in the wake of COVID-19. The club operates without the backing of an AFL affiliate, relying instead on sponsorships, match-day revenue, and the dedication of its people.

“You can’t run a club on goodwill alone,” Fadi said. “They needed real support, and I saw an opportunity to step up.”

Coburg’s identity as a proudly independent VFL club is central to its mission. The Lions serve Melbourne’s northern suburbs with junior development programs, men’s and women’s teams, and pathways into professional football. The club also takes a principled stance against gambling revenue, refusing to accept funds from poker machines despite the financial strain.

“We just don’t believe we can claim to be family-focused and community-driven while also taking money from pokies,” Byrne explained. “Every dollar we raise comes through sponsorships, match days, and the hard work of the people around this club.”

Barry Plant Head of Marketing, Kashka Hardy, attended the club’s recent 2026 Jersey Presentation Night with his family and immediately felt part of the Coburg community.

“I wanted to come down to the club and show Barry Plant’s support for the Coburg Lions in person, not just through our sponsorship. The night was an amazing opportunity to see the Coburg community come together, and I felt incredibly proud seeing the Barry Plant logo on the jersey and supporting a club with such a wonderful history. I’m going to have to buy the kids some merch now,” Hardy laughed.

The partnership has also attracted attention from higher levels of government. In 2025, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Byrne and other local sports leaders to discuss infrastructure upgrades, including the need for lighting at Barry Plant Park to support night games and expanded community access.

On the field, Coburg’s resurgence is clear. After going winless just two years ago, the Lions have climbed back to competitiveness, closing out the 2025 VFL season with 9 wins and 9 losses – falling just short of a finals berth. Nick Byrne is confident the momentum will continue, with the club eyeing a long-awaited return to finals as a standalone team for the first time since the 1990s.

“Our players, coaches, and staff have stuck together, and we’re building something special,” said Byrne. “We’re on track to seriously contend for finals in the next few seasons.”

For Fadi, the partnership is deeply personal and deeply communal.

“This club is built on a united community, all pulling in the same direction,” he said. “Barry Plant is much the same. We may be one of Victoria’s largest real estate networks, but we still operate like a family business. If you believe in ethics, excellence and community, we’re hiring.”

With renewed backing and a clear sense of purpose, The Coburg Football Club is stepping into a bold new chapter. Barry Plant Park is more than a new name on the stands – it’s a symbol of what can be achieved when people put community first.
