The Cup weekend is one often avoided by sellers who choose to hold their auctions either before or after the long weekend to try and ensure maximum audience participation. Although this would seem sensible on the surface, it usually ensures that the weekends on either side of the cup are “Super Saturdays” with well over 1000 auctions taking place across Melbourne.

With only a handful of auctions today, crowd numbers were strong as neighbours came out to see how their local market was faring. Buyers also took the chance to compete for the small number of proper on offer.

Technology allowed 2 bidders at subsequent Barry Plant auctions to compete even though they were actually overseas. Both bid by phone with an agent to represent them live at the auction and both were ready to sign contracts electronically should they have been successful. Unfortunately, they were both beaten by a nose in fierce competition which saw the 2 homes sold for a combined half a million dollars above the reserves!

Perhaps providing a lesson for the punters among us that auctioning on Cup weekend is not such a bad bet after all!
