Are your windows child safe?
One of the hidden risks that most people overlook within their home, but which can provide a genuine threat, (particularly to young children), are unsecured cords attached to window blinds and curtains.
The fact is that these loose cords are a strangulation threat for young children when they form a loop. Data from the Department of Consumer Affairs indicates that more than 20 young children have lost their lives in Australia due to this issue over the past twenty years or so.
That is why new regulations were introduced in Victoria requiring all rental properties with cords on their window furnishings to be fitted with a safety kit which is designed to maintain tension on the cords, reducing the danger. So if you own a rental property in this State, I urge you to ensure that your property is safe for children. If you are not sure, it’s worth giving your property manager a call to ensure this has not been overlooked.
Of course, this doesn’t just apply to rental properties, so if you have cords hanging loose from your windows at home, this is your chance to make them child safe.
The good news is that Consumer Affairs have made a safety kit available for Victorian residents, and it’s FREE! This device comes with instructions and can be easily attached with a screwdriver.
