This is a lively neighbourhood with a thriving café and restaurant scene. Rathdowne Street and the northern end of Nicholson Street are the locations of most of the activity. This way of life draws a lot of singles and newlyweds, but families also enjoy Carlton North.

Expecting enormous homes on broad, lush streets would be unrealistic because this is mostly an inner city suburb. Small Edwardian and Victorian-style terraces are where most people dwell. Despite their size, they remain expensive since it is expensive to reside in a hip area thus close to the CBD.

In the middle of the suburb is a small park with a basketball court and a playground. The bigger Princes Park, which borders the neighbourhood on its western side, contains a tennis club, sports facilities, and the stadium of the Carlton Australian Rules Football League team. Also located in the area is the sizable Melbourne General Cemetery.
