About Carlton North

Carlton North is a suburb just 4km from Melbournes CBD. The main commercial area is along Rathdowne Street where you’ll find charming boutique stores, bookshops, cafes and fine restaurants.

Within the local government areas of the Cities of Melbourne and Yarra, Carlton North is an inner-city neighbourhood in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, approximately 4 km north of the city's Central Business District. In Carlton North, there were 6,177 people according to the 2021 census. Neighbouring suburbs include Carlton, Fitzroy North and Brunswick East.

This is a lively neighbourhood with a thriving café and restaurant scene. Rathdowne Street and the northern end of Nicholson Street are the locations of most of the activity. Locals throng these streets to eat at hotspots like the Natural Tucker Bakery and the original La Porchetta pizza. This way of life draws a lot of singles and newlyweds, but families also enjoy Carlton North.

For your weekly groceries, there are a number of options including Coles, Woolworths, Foodworks, IGA, & Rathdowne Village grocer. There are also a number of markets in the area such as Carlton Farmers market, Fitzroy market, and the famous Queen Victoria Market only a 10-minute drive away.

Expecting enormous homes on broad, lush streets would be unrealistic because this is mostly an inner city suburb. Small Edwardian and Victorian-style terraces are where most people dwell. Despite their size, they remain expensive since it is expensive to reside in a hip area thus close to the CBD.

In the middle of the suburb is a small park with a basketball court and a playground. The bigger Princes Park, which borders the neighbourhood on its western side, contains a tennis club, sports facilities, and the stadium of the Carlton Australian Rules Football League team. Also located in the area is the sizable Melbourne General Cemetery.
