Altona housing consists of low density residential houses in the south-eastern half, with mixed industry in the north-western half of the suburb.
Altona Beach on Port Phillip bay is one of only two swimming beaches in the western suburbs. The suburb also has many significant parks and gardens, including some important environmental conservation areas and wetlands.
If you frequent the east side of the bay for your wet pup frolicking times, you may not be familiar with the west side's brilliant offering. Altona's dog beach is a magical land for dogs local to the area. At low tide there's heaps of space for any number of dogs to run around freely, splash around in the shallows and smell each others' butts.
Altona has four primary school being Altona Primary School, Seaholme Primary School, Altona College (formerly Altona Secondary College and Altona West Primary School) and St. Marys Catholic Primary School. Altona's secondary schools include Mount St. Joseph Girls' College and Altona College.
Altona has excellent transport links with two train stations (Altona and Westona) on the Werribee railway line.
Shopping is available along Pier Street, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner and take in the view of the beach while you sip on a coffee. There’s also a range of sporting opportunities with facilities such as the Altona Basketball Stadium, Kooringal Golf Club, Altona Tennis Club, Altona Cricket Club, Altona Football Club and the Altona Hockey Club.
