About Diamond Creek

Diamond Creek is a vibrant, established suburb located 23 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, nestled in the scenic green wedge of the Nillumbik Shire. Known for its strong community spirit and extensive local amenities, the area successfully balances accessibility to Melbourne with the charm of an outer-suburban village.

Diamond Creek's history is marked by significant postwar population growth, leading to the formation of the Diamond Valley Shire in 1964, setting the foundation for the thriving, well-serviced community it is today.

The Diamond Valley Shire was created out of the northern part of the Shire of Heidelberg in 1964, and further population growth occurred throughout the 1970s.

The suburb boasts excellent community infrastructure, centered around the Diamond Creek Community Centre. This facility, jointly administered by the Shire of Nillumbik and the YMCA, is a comprehensive venue offering basketball courts, a gymnasium, group fitness classes, child care, and community classes. It also houses Nillumbik's Maternal & Child Health Service and served a vital role as an evacuation point during the February 2009 Victorian bushfires, providing emergency accommodation and relief.

The local landscape features distinct landmarks, including St John's Anglican church prominently located at the top of Main Road. Nearby, The Abbey, which once served as a place of worship and a popular wedding reception centre, now operates as a tasteful funeral parlour. The strong community focus is highlighted by the active Rotary Club of Diamond Creek, which organises the annual Diamond Creek Town Fair each September. This highly anticipated event commences with a grand parade featuring local schools and community groups, offering food, crafts, fairground attractions, and entertainment. It traditionally concludes with an evening torchlight parade by the local CFA units and a fireworks display. Diamond Creek also relies on a busy CFA (Country Fire Authority) volunteer fire brigade, established in 1942, which attends to over 230 emergency calls annually. In 2005, a new emergency services centre was built on Main Hurstbridge Rd, consolidating CFA, Metropolitan Ambulance Service, and Police facilities, demonstrating the suburb's commitment to safety.

Diamond Creek provides extensive shopping options, including large retailers such as a Coles Supermarket and a Mitre 10 Home & Trade. The shopping precinct has developed over the years, with a former Tuckerbag supermarket becoming a Foodworks and later operating as a Ritchies Supa IGA. The diverse retail landscape includes the Diamond Creek Plaza which houses Tattersalls, Bakers Delight, IGA Liquor, and a Priceline Pharmacy, which is a key local chemist alongside a major nearby retail draw, the St Helena Marketplace. The Diamond Creek Shopping Station has also been extended multiple times, adding stores like a BWS, a fitness centre, and a wheelchair-accessible Bendigo Bank. Dining and hospitality are well-represented by the recently renovated Diamond Creek Tavern, which offers bistro dining, a sports bar, and function rooms.

Other popular local eateries include La Sera Pizza and Pasta & Ribs, Dessert Plis, Kikucjo Sushi, Platters Cafe & Bar, and the local Golden Hills Brewery and Diamond Creek Hotel. For recreation, the suburb features several green spaces and sporting facilities, including Marngrook Oval, Coventry Oval, Nillumbik Park, Campbell Street Reserve, and Challenger Street Reserve.
