About Alfredton

The most populated suburb in the Ballarat urban area, Alfredton has some of the goldfields most recognised landmarks, including the Arch of Victory which sits at the entrance of the Avenue of Honour.

The Town

Named after Prince Alfred following his visit to the area in 1867, and originally part of Cardigan, Alfredton is now the most populated suburb in the Ballarat urban area and it is easy to see why. With Victoria Park to the east and the Prince of Wales Park bordering the suburb to the north, Alfredton itself offers an abundance of green and open spaces which is why it is such a popular destination for families (a huge 76.7% of Alfredton’s population are families).

Alfredton is also home to part of the Avenue of Honour, which is Australia’s longest war memorial running approximately 18km down the Western Highway.

What To Do

The Arch of Victory (Western Highway) kicks off the famed Avenue of Honour and is a must see when in Alfredton. The arch commemorates the Allied forces victory in World War I, and stands at a striking 17.5m high and almost 20m wide. The Alfredton Recreation Reserve (corner Cuthberts Road and Elaine Avenue) is an expansive and memorable park with a sporting oval and BMX track. Whether you’re a local going for an after work run, want to have a kick of footy on the weekend, or are after a peaceful space for a picnic, this reserve needs to be your first choice!

Where To Eat And Drink

Fat Chef Ballarat (1845 Sturt Street) is located at the Bell Tower Inn and are known for their Rib Master platter (you’ll need to skip both breakfast and lunch to fit this one in). The Greenside Bistro (1800 Sturt Street) is part of the Ballarat Golf Club as offers a quiet and relaxed green setting for both lunch and dinner (and you don’t have to have played 18 rounds to enjoy their delectable menu). The Park Hotel (1615 Sturt Street) is your prototypical pub within walking distance of Lake Wendouree and Victoria Park. With a sports bar and large outdoor area for the summer months, you can partake in amazing pub food, with the Chicken Avodaise and Brisket Burger some of their best work.
