About Golden Square

As the name indicates, Golden Square played a pivotal part in Bendigo’s gold rush history. Today, it stands as charming family-friendly suburb, with scenic streets lined with a mix of classic and ultra-modern residences.

The Town

Located directly next to the Bendigo township and offering a wealth of attractions and amenities for locals, Golden Square has all your bases covered. As its name suggests, shiny gold was found in the Bendigo Creek in 1851, which is where the current Golden Square Hotel now stands, with this miraculous find sparking the gold rush in Bendigo and surrounds.

Current day Golden Square is a sleepy and relaxed suburb which is dominated by family households, who enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and range of excellent shops and restaurants. Golden Square also has a rich sporting history, being the hometown of 2-time Brownlow Medallist Greg Williams as well as AFL superstars Wayne Campbell and Nathan Brown.

Where To Eat And Drink

The Gold Mines Hotel (48-57 Marong Road) is positioned on an elevated 1.2 acres opposite the historic Victoria Hill mine, and was opened in 1872. This period beauty still retains so much of its classic history, and offers up a wonderful menu including tried and true pub classics. The venue is also used for functions and events.

A visit to Golden Square isn’t complete without stopping into another historic location, The Foundry Hotel (366 High Street). With roots dating back to 1870, this warm and welcoming venue consists of a family bistro, outdoor courtyard, gaming room, and function spaces.

Also part of the Foundry Hotel is Mister Bobs (366 High Street) which is the ultimate sports bar. With over 20 big screens (showing everything from AFL and Rugby league to NCAA Women’s basketball), an outdoor courtyard, tank beer, and scrumptious lunch and dinner fare, this is an unmissable place to cheer your team on over a burger or parma.

The aforementioned Golden Square Hotel (341 High Street) is another stalwart of the area if you desire that nostalgic pub experience.

Gallo Coffee Co (429-433 High Street) is a coffee roaster and café which is arguably the most popular venue in Golden Square for breakfast and brunch, serving up the suburb's best lattes while also offering proper sit-down meals and quick takeaway options (their toasted Turkishes are to die for).
