About Corio

Corio is one of Geelong's largest and most important suburbs, strategically located approximately nine kilometres north of the city’s central business district, acting as a crucial residential and industrial hub.

The suburb’s name is thought to derive from the local Aboriginal term "coraiyo," referring either to sandy cliffs along the bay or a small marsupial.

Historically, Corio became a major industrial centre, home to the Shell Oil Refinery and the massive Ford Motor Company plant until its closure, leaving a significant, though shifting, economic legacy. Today, the suburb is characterized by a high proportion of freestanding residential houses and an increasingly diverse community.

The lifestyle in Corio is built around convenience and accessibility. The area is dominated by the Corio Central shopping centre, a major retail facility housing Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, and over 100 specialty stores, providing comprehensive local shopping and dining options. Education is well-catered for with numerous institutions, ranging from public schools like Northern Bay College (which has multiple campuses within the suburb) to the historically significant, private Geelong Grammar School, located on the suburb’s northeast edge.

For recreation, Corio offers many local reserves, sporting clubs, ovals, and access to the Northern Aquatic and Community Hub, providing excellent facilities for health and fitness.

Corio is exceptionally well-connected, making it a functional base for commuters. The suburb is served by V/Line trains running from Corio railway station to both Geelong and Melbourne.

Additionally, the area benefits greatly from the Geelong Bypass, completed in 2009, which routes through traffic on the Princes Freeway around the suburb, significantly reducing local congestion and increasing residential tranquility. The property market in

Corio is regarded as one of the most affordable entry points into the Geelong area, with an affordable median house price and strong rental demand, making it a compelling option for first-home buyers and investors seeking value with solid rental yields.
