About Moolap

Moolap is a large and complex suburb of Geelong, uniquely defined by a significant blend of industrial heritage, environmental importance, and emerging low-density residential development.

Located just five kilometres southeast of the Geelong central business district, Moolap’s name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal word "moo-laa," meaning 'men gathering to go fishing,' reflecting its historical connection to Point Henry and Corio Bay.

This peninsula area, which includes Moolap, has a fascinating history, transitioning from a bustling 19th-century tourist hub with Swiss-style chalets to a major industrial centre featuring the former Alcoa aluminium smelter and the historic Cheetham Saltworks.

Today, Moolap is an area of significant transition and environmental focus. While parts of the suburb along the Portarlington Road maintain an industrial and commercial presence, the vast Moolap Wetlands and former salt pans are recognized as an internationally important habitat for tens of thousands of migratory shorebirds, forming a crucial part of the Bellarine Peninsula's Ramsar-listed wetlands. Extensive planning is underway through the Moolap Wetlands Environmental Management Masterplan to balance heritage protection with ecological conservation and prepare for coastal changes.

The suburb offers a unique lifestyle proposition. While being close to the amenities of Newcomb and Whittington, Moolap provides exceptional recreational assets, including the Bellarine Lakes Golf Course and the Reedy Lake State Game Reserve to the south.

Local facilities include Moolap Primary School and the Splashdown Leisure Centre, ensuring core community needs are met. The property market is diverse, featuring everything from low-density residential homes to expansive lifestyle properties.
