ABOUT WEATHERBOARD

Weatherboard is a quiet, expansive rural locality situated approximately 20 kilometres north-west of Ballarat. It is defined by its wide-open volcanic plains and a strictly pastoral identity that has remained largely unchanged for over a century. The area sits within the City of Ballarat, bordered by other agricultural districts such as Learmonth, Windermere, and Burrumbeet.

The locality takes its unique name from local lore; it is said to be the site of the first house in the region constructed with timber weatherboards rather than the more common corrugated iron, stone, or bark used by early settlers. This heritage of early selection and settlement is still evident in the landscape, which is marked by long-standing farmstead gates, cypress windbreaks, and expansive paddocks.

Geographically, the area is characterized by the prominent Weatherboard Hill, a volcanic scoria cone that rises above the surrounding basalt plains. This elevated point provides panoramic views across the Western District, looking toward Lake Learmonth and the distant peaks of the Central Highlands. The land here is highly valued for its fertile volcanic soil, supporting a mix of large-scale cropping and livestock grazing, particularly sheep and cattle.

Life in Weatherboard is secluded and private, with no central township or commercial hub. Instead, the community is comprised of a small number of farming families and lifestyle landholders who rely on the nearby historic township of Learmonth or the regional center of Ballarat for services. It remains a quintessential example of the Victorian "high country" plains—a landscape of big skies, seasonal colors, and deep agricultural roots.
