About Eaglehawk

From the iconic and very historic town hall which sits in Brassey Square, to the beauty of Canterbury Park Gardens which blooms with colour in springtime, Eaglehawk is a charming suburb just outside of Bendigo with a tight-knit community and plenty of joys to experience.

The Town

Situated north-west of the Bendigo township and offering everything from charming tourist attractions to great sporting and leisure facilities, schools, and events, Eaglehawk truly has it all! Referenced in the Banjo Patterson poem Mulga Bill’s Bicycle (introducing the character Mulga Bill from Eaglehawk), Eaglehawk showcases postcard beautiful settings, from the grand town hall turned cinema, to the original post office and mechanics hall which is now a public library. Families who reside in Eaglehawk relish in having access to the renowned schools and sporting clubs, as well as a smorgasbord of dining options to choose from on and around High Street. Eaglehawk is also the birthplace of former Victorian Premier John Brumby.

What To Do

The Eaglehawk Town Hall (Peg Leg Road) is one of the area’s genuine highlights, and was built in 1901 on a site where there was a previous town hall built in 1865. Designed by architects Wilkinson and Permewan, the stunning building is now used as a cinema (Star Cinema), and still retains so much of its exquisite period beauty. The jewel of Eaglehawk’s open space precinct, Canterbury Park Gardens (Sailors Gully Road) allows visitors to walk the trails around Lake Neangar and Lake Tom Thumb, check out the amphitheatre and jetty, and enjoy the Mulga-themed playspace. The gardens also host the Dahlia and Arts Festival each year in March. The aforementioned Lake Tom Thumb is also one of the scenic standouts of Eaglehawk, and is brilliant for a quiet stroll after grabbing a hearty meal in town.

Where To Eat And Drink

The Borough Club (2/4 High Street) is the ideal setting if you want to experience a welcoming pub dinner with friends and family. The double storey brick building overlooks Canterbury Park Gardens, and has all your standard pub fare including the yummy roast lamb and classic chicken parma. The Courthouse Hotel (16 Sailors Gully Road) is another popular pub offering counter meals and a range of great beers on tap.

Borough Coffee Crema (43 High Street) is the go-to latte joint in Eaglehawk, and you’ll be hard pressed not to walk out of there with a sweet slice or two. On the other side of town and neighbouring gorgeous parklands, The Gully Tuckerbox (195 Upper California Road) is another casual eatery for delicious breakfasts and brunches.
