Tarwin Lower is a small riverside township in South Gippsland, about 167 km southeast of Melbourne and roughly 7 km east of Venus Bay. Set on the southern banks of the Tarwin River, the town is a scenic thoroughfare to coastal areas like Venus Bay and Walkerville.

Lifestyle & Community

The town’s main street, River Drive, hosts essential local amenities including a small supermarket, a mechanics institute hall, tennis courts, a CFA station, and a primary school. Local markets are held regularly at the Mechanics Institute, particularly on holiday weekends. Community services such as visiting doctors and early childhood programs operate from the local community centre. Recreational opportunities include a fishing jetty and a scenic boardwalk along the river, which is popular with walkers and cyclists. Tarwin Lower also hosted the Unify Gathering heavy music festival from 2015 to 2019 and resumed in 2022.

Employment & Industry

More than 85 % of the adult workforce is employed, with roughly 44 % in full‐time roles and 42 % in part‐time positions. Common occupations include managers, labourers, professionals, and trades workers. Local industries are largely agriculture-based, with beef and dairy farming being the primary employers, along with some sheep‐beef farming, hospitality, and local government roles.

Tarwin Lower Primary School caters to children from Prep to Year 6 and has a small enrolment of around 37 students. For secondary schooling, students typically travel to larger towns such as Wonthaggi.
